The Future of Programmable Money – Andreas M. Antonopoulos

In this video at the Polish Bitcoin Congress (Polski Kongres Bitcoin) on May 12, 2018 in Warsaw, Andreas Antonopoulos gives us a fascinating look into one of the aspects that makes Bitcoin and other blockchain-based cryptocurrencies so attractive: their “weirdness”.

Antonopoulos presents various instances during his life where gentrification, or the normalizing/taming of situations, has essentially brought about the stagnation and death of communities. He states that in the midst of this weirdness is where growth and innovation occurs. Unfortunately, this is where there seems to be a disconnect between mainstream corporations and their desire to profit from “bottling the lightning.” This strategy effectively neuters the weirdness and its potential for being lightning.

Antonopolous explains that Bitcoin’s beauty resides in the fact that, “This is the first time we have a digital community that can’t be gentrified.” The fierce independence of the crypto-community, as well as their general mistrust of government, big corporations, and regulating entities, has created the ideal environment for blockchain technology.
